Urgent Community Gathering in Bariloche

The Mapuche community calls for an urgent Trawn meeting due to a firm eviction order affecting their territory. This follows a history of violence and land disputes. Participation is crucial for protecting both the land and spiritual processes.

Urgent Community Gathering in Bariloche

In the territory of Bariloche, Argentina, an emergency situation is unfolding for the Mapuche community. In 1993, Lucinda Quintupuray, an indigenous resident, was murdered in an attempt to dispossess the natives of their lands. Her son, Victorino, shared the same tragic fate. These crimes paved the way for the exploitation of the lands for monoculture pine by businessman Rolando Rocco.

In a more recent act, Elías Cayicol Garay Yem was murdered in November 2021, and Gonzalo Cabrera was seriously injured in the same attack. Unfortunately, the community is facing an eviction order in the territory of Lof Quemquemtrew, so an urgent meeting has been called to seek strategies that protect both the lands and the spiritual aspect of the community.

Recently, three community members were convicted of usurpation after a territorial claim in La Tapera de los Álamos. Judge Romina Martini upheld the eviction sentence, raising concern and mobilization within the Mapuche community. A meeting is scheduled for January 28, followed by the start of a trawn on February 1 with traditional ceremonies and the participation of organizations supporting the community.

Additionally, those responsible for these crimes, Diego Ravasio and Martín Feilberg, are currently serving their sentences. The struggle for land and justice for the Mapuche community continues, and the solidarity of other groups and non-indigenous individuals is crucial in this moment of crisis.
